There were 5.53 million working-age disabled people in employment in October to December 2023, an increase of 338,000 from October to December 2022 according to The House of Commons Library. in March 2024 However they are just over a fifth of the UK’s working-age population – tend to have lower levels of employment. Legislation has made discrimination against disabled people unlawful, but the employment gap persists, requiring policy interventions to reduce inequalities.
Disabled people typically have lower employment rates than those who are not disabled. This trend, which is found across the world, is referred to as the disability employment gap and it forms a key indicator of disability-related inequalities in the labour market.

The proportion of adults with a learning disability in paid employment has decreased over time, from 6.0% in 2014/15 to a low of 4.8% in 2021/22. A slightly higher proportion of men with a learning disability are employed than women; in 2021/22, 4.1% of women with a learning disability were in paid employment compared with 5.3% of men.
